Katherine Agnew, affectionately known as “Kat”, was born on October 1, 1948, to the late J.C. Walker and Josephine Hill Walker. Katherine was a spirited child and always had a quick wit—which she carried with her throughout her life. She could always make someone laugh just by being herself. Katherine was known for her caring heart and had an infectious smile. She graduated from Carver High School in 1969 and attended Coahoma Community College. Katherine accepted Christ at an early age and joined Whitehill Missionary Baptist Church. She enjoyed singing and was a member of the Gospel Lights.
Katherine was married to Pastor Clarence Agnew, Sr. for almost 49 years and the mother of 6 children. She was a foster mom and adopted 4 children. Katherine also had the pleasure of being a military wife, moving to Panama in 1973. then to Anniston, AL to Detroit, MI. She worked for Plymouth Inn Nursing Home for 5 years. In 2008, she relocated back home to MS to care for her parents.
Katherine had the heart of God and was a faithful servant. She became a member of First Tabernacle Church of God in Christ, in Detroit, MI in 1987, where she served as deaconess, praise team leader, food coordinator and a licensed missionary. The spirit of the Lord led her husband, Clarence, to birth a ministry in 2001, Mercy Temple Church of God in Christ. First Lady Agnew began classes to mentor women and was the director of the women's department and children's ministry. She also served on the pastor's aid and as a missionary at Victory Temple Outreach Ministries, where she remained faithful until death.
Katherine's favorite pastime was shopping, whether online, QVC or her many trips to Walmart that she thoroughly enjoyed. She also loved to travel and spend quality time with family and friends.
Katherine bid her loved ones farewell on Friday, March 13, 2022, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo, MS.
Katherine's legacy and memory will live on through her husband, Pastor Clarence Agnew, Sr.; her sons, Clarence E. Agnew, Jr. (Karla), Cornelius Agnew and Andre Johnson (Yolanda); her daughters, Courtney Mullins and Shavon Branch, her grandchildren, Chavyonda Johnson, Madison Agnew, Carter Mullins and Bryntton Cooper, her sisters, Dorothy Thornton (Bishop Willie), Mary Nell Arnold (Earnest) and Betty Collier; her brothers, Bishop Richard Walker (Shariah) and Robert Walker (Bessie); sister-in-law, Janice Walker; special aunt, Linda Bell; special uncle, Lonnie "Robert" James; special sister-in-law, Georgia Mae Agnew; God-sisters, Amanda Stovall and Tonza DeBerry; and special friends, Johnnie Mae Bass and Lula Brown.
Katherine also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and close family friends to cherish her memory, and will be greatly missed by all she met and knew.
Katherine was preceded in death by her parents, J.C. and Josephine Hill Walker, her brother, Reverend Joseph Walker, Sr., her daughter, Amber Agnew and her grandparents, Lonnie and Willie B. Hill and Sanders and Lula Walker.
Her Celebration of Life - Homegoing Service will be held at Living Word & Praise Sanctuary, 4738 Roebuck Road, Tupelo, MS on Saturday, May 21, 2022 at 11:00 AM. Visitation will be held on Friday, May 20, 2022 at Holland Funeral Directors, 5281 Cliff Gookin Blvd., Tupelo, MS 38801 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. A full obituary will follow.
