Shirlie "Buddy" McDaniel

June 14, 1935 ~ April 17, 2019 (age 83)

Tupelo – Shirlie Nathaniel McDaniel, GYSGT., U.S. Marine Corps., Retired, age, 83, died Wednesday, April 17, 2019 at North MS Medical Center.  He was born June 14, 1935 in the Eggville community to Chester and Lavada Oswalt McDaniel.  He was a graduate of Tupelo High School and continued his studies at Itawamba Community College with a degree in Heating and Air.  He served 23 years in the U.S. Marine Corps, serving in Lebanon during the Vietnam War. Along with the National Defense Service medal, he also received the Combat Action Ribbon, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, and Presidential Unit Citation.  After retiring from the military, he was self-employed as an electrician and heating and air technician.  He was known by his friends and family as “Buddy” or ‘Mac”.  He attended St. James Catholic Church.  He enjoyed reading westerns, fishing, and traveling.  He was an active member of the Marine Corps League.

A funeral service with military honors will be at 11 AM, Wednesday, April 24, 2019 in the Tupelo Chapel of Holland Funeral Directors with Father Tim Murphy officiating.  Visitation will be 5-7pm, Tuesday, April 23, 2019 at Tupelo Chapel. Private burial will be at the National Cemetery in Corinth, MS.  Pallbearers will be the Marine Corp. League.

Survivors include his son, Edwin McDaniel of Tupelo and a special friend, Lynda Gannon and her family, of Tupelo.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Anita McDaniel who died in 2004, and a brother, Ray Charles McDaniel.
