Tupelo/Corinth-Evelyn Pratt McEwen, 91 passed away on Saturday, May 25, 2019 at Sanctuary Hospice House. She fought a short but courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Evelyn was born in Acton, Tennessee on May 20, l928 to James Ledford Pratt and Minnie Farris Pratt. She graduated from Corinth High School in l946 and later continued her education at Northeast Mississippi Junior College. In 1947, she married William Norris McEwen in Corinth, Mississippi where they lived until May, l998 when they moved to Tupelo. Evelyn was an active, faithful member of West Corinth Church of Christ, Foote Street Church of Christ in Corinth and West Main Church of Christ in Tupelo. She was a business woman who, at one time, owned three Merle Norman Cosmetic Studios and The China Cabinet, a bridal registry business. She was best known for the 36 years she owned and operated the Merle Norman Studio on Cruise Street in Corinth, which she opened in l962 and sold in l998. She was a kind, gentle soul whose legacy will be that of compassion and encouragement to her family and wide circle of friends.
Evelyn is survived by two daughters, Mary Ann Wallace (Doug) of Tupelo and Linda M. Hutcheson (Gene) of Flora, Mississippi. Four grandchildren who affectionately knew her as Granny-Brett Wallace (Brandy), Dr. Erica Bass (Jonathan), Grant Hutcheson (Jenna) and Meredith Elise Hutcheson and six great grandchildren; Her brother, O.D. Pratt of Centerville, Tennessee and a sister in law, Edna Faye Dillingham of Corinth. She was preceded in death by her husband, Norris McEwen,, her parents, Mr and Mrs. J. L Pratt, two sisters in law, Frances Pratt and Jewel McEwen Armstrong, two brothers in law, John Dillingham and Jake T.Armstrong and an infant brother, James Basil Pratt.
A service celebrating her life will be held at 11 AM Wednesday, May 29, 2019 at the Tupelo Chapel of Holland Funeral Directors (5281 Cliff Gookin Blvd, Tupelo, Ms). Ministers Brad Dillingham and Doug Greenway will officiate. Donnie McCay will lead the congregational singing. Private burial will follow in the McEwen family plot at Henry Cemetery in Corinth. Visitation will be from 5 PM-7PM today (Tue) and from 10 AM – service time on Wednesday, all at Holland Funeral Directors-Tupelo Chapel, which is honored to be serving their friends. Pallbearers will be Brett Wallace, Grant Hutcheson, Ben Pratt, Ken Pratt, Stan Dillingham and Stuart Bennett. Honorary pallbearers will be Glenda Malone, Maggie Simeneau, Patsy Weaver, Annie Martin, Jane Westmoreland, Betty Barber, Lamoise Young, Jean Smith, Clytee Mitchell, Peggy Ramsey, Sue Dillingham and Tom Armstrong.
