Elizabeth Otts Holley
Cordova, TN/Shannon-One of the kindest, most gentle and pleasant ladies in these parts, Martha
Elizabeth Otts Holley, 87, transformed from this life to the life everlasting on Tuesday, December 4,2018
while residing with her daughter, Jan and son in law, Mark at their home in Cordova, Tenn. Elizabeth
was born to Lando Hobson Otts and Corrie Frederick Otts on March 17, 1931 in Okolona. She grew up in
the Shannon area and attended Shannon Public Schools. Elizabeth was smitten by a young man named
Marion Holley from Nettleton and became his wife on August 14, 1948 while still in high school. Bro.
Marion surrendered to the ministry and both moved to the Newton area and attended Clark College.
Elizabeth was a faithful wife, a devoted preacher's wife whose love and watch care over their church
congregations in Alabama and mostly Mississippi was legendary. She first worked for Sears as a
telephone operator. Later, due to her love of little children, she began a 20 year career at Shannon
Elementary School where she taught 2nd grade and doted over every student she ever taught. She was
known to stay after school and tutor students in need of her special touch in teaching. She and Bro.
Marion's last pastorate was at Union Chapel Baptist Church west of Shannon where her membership
remained until the end. Elizabeth, like her father, was talkative, humorous and a thoroughly enjoyable
soul. Her visits were hallmark moments. She loved bubble gum and Southern gospel music. After Bro.
Marion's declining health in 2012, they moved to Cordova with their only daughter. Bro. Marion died on
Sept. 9, 2013. Elizabeth remained with her beloved Jan who coddled her, got her interested in adult
coloring, word search and jigsaw puzzles. Jan was at her side when she quietly slipped into eternity.
A service celebrating her faith and victory will be held at Noon Saturday, December 8, 2018 at the
Tupelo Chapel of Holland Funeral Directors with Bro. Robert Armstrong officiating and Bro. Ralph Cain
assisting. Private burial will follow in Lee Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 11 AM-service time
Saturday only at Holland-Tupelo Chapel, which is honored to be serving their friends.
Elizabeth leaves behind, her only child, Jan Dessem and her beloved son in law, Mark Dessum of
Cordova. A special sister in law, Martha Holley of Holly Springs, MS. and a grand dog, Charlie. She was
preceded in death by her husband, her parents and a beloved fur baby, Maggie.
Memorials may be made to the Bro. Marion Holley Preacher Education Fund, c/o Union Chapel Baptist
Church, P. o. Box 33, Shannnon, MS. 38868. The service may be viewed via
