Tupelo-Charles Vardaman Estes, 80, died Thursday, June 13, 2019 at his residence in Tupelo after a brief illness. Charles was born in Tupelo on December 17, l938 to the late Vardaman and Erlie Price Estes. He attended Tupelo Public Schools and studied at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg. Charles worked with his parents and became the owner/operator of Estes Jewelers in Tupelo for over 30 years. He enjoyed his profession and interacting with his many customers and friends over the years. He was a member of the First Christian Church near Baldwyn and was a fisherman, great storyteller and knowledgeable historian. He especially enjoyed Indian lore and history.
A service celebrating his life will be held at 2 PM Saturday, June 15, 2019 at the Tupelo Chapel of Holland Funeral Directors with Bro. Kelly Carmichael officiating and Steve Holland delivering personal remarks. Private burial will be in Tupelo Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 1 PM-service time on Saturday only at Holland-Tupelo Chapel which is honored to be serving the family.
Charles leaves behind his wife, Peggy Ayers Estes to whom he married Oct. 2, 1962; his son, Tommy Estes of Booneville; his brother, Jackie Estes (Patty) of Madison. A nephew, Bill Estes and niece, Elaine Estes all of Madison and other near relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Kenny Estes in l989.
