Professor Billy Denton
Saltillo-Billy Wayne Denton, 65, met his Lord and Savior after suffering an apparent heart attack while visiting the Holy Land and climbing Mount Sinai in Egypt on Friday, June 7, 2019. A devout child of God, Billy was born in New Albany, MS. on August 10, 1953 to the late Dwaine Denton and Marlene Winters Denton. He grew up in Verona, attended the public schools and graduated from Shannon High School in l971. Professor Denton continued his education at Itawamba Community College, attained his Bachelors of Art Degree in Education from Mississippi State University as well as eventually attaining his Masters of Arts in Educational Leadership at MSU. Ever striving to learn as much as possible, he worked toward a PhD at the University of Mississippi. Billy taught at Shannon a few years before joining the faculty at Itawamba Community College on Jan. 7, 1982. He retired from full time teaching on June 30, 2011 but, at his death, was still teaching Tuesday and Thursday classes. Professor Denton was Division Chair of Mathematics and Computer Science at ICC where he gained a stellar reputation as an effective and respected teacher and administrator. Billy mentored hundreds of students in mathematics and computer science and led “Computer Camp” each year at the college. He formerly was ordained as a deacon at the Brewer Baptist Church near Shannon on May 29, l979. Upon moving to Saltillo in 2000, he and Sharon became a part of the community of believers at Saltillo First United Methodist Church. Professor enjoyed crossword puzzles, travel, studying history and watching regularly the History Channel. His love of learning and his long career of teaching young people as well as his commitment to family and God will be his beloved legacy.
A service celebrating his life will be held at 11 AM Tuesday, June 18, 2019 from the Sanctuary of the Saltillo First United Methodist Church with pastor, Rev. Tim Green, officiating. The children will deliver special reflections of their dad. Burial will follow in Saltillo Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 PM-7PM Monday (6/17/19) and one hour before the service on Tuesday, all at the Church, 737 Old Hwy 45, Saltillo, MS. 38866.
Billy is survived by his family; his wife, Sharon Hendrix Denton, to whom he married June 1, l973; his children, Kimberly Denton Dixon (Zack) of Blue Springs and Allen Denton (Stephanie) of Belden. 2 grandchildren, Bradyn Denton of Belden and Sarah Denton of Blue Springs. His sister, Vickie Robbins of Biloxi and brother, Mike Denton of Verona and his extended family from ICC and Saltillo First United Methodist Church.
Pallbearers will be Johnny Green, Sonny Graham, Bernard Evans, Jack Herring, Jason Herring and Jonathan Cheney. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Walter Burns Sunday School Class at Saltillo FUMC, where Billy was a faithful and respected member.
